Android “Minimum supported Gradle version”: update the wrapper
Match the wrapper's Gradle version to your AGP's minimum using the compatibility table.
Update the wrapper to the required version: edit gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties so distributionUrl points at the minimum Gradle from the error (for example gradle-8.7-bin.zip), or run ./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version 8.7. Check the AGP compatibility table when in doubt.
Try these fixes in order
Read the required version
Read the minimum version from the error message itself; that is the version your AGP requires.
Update the Gradle wrapper
Point the wrapper at the required Gradle distribution. The next sync downloads it automatically.
./gradlew wrapper --gradle-version 8.7Or edit wrapper properties by hand
Alternatively, edit gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties directly and change the distributionUrl line.
Re-sync and verify
Re-sync the project and confirm the build uses the new Gradle with ./gradlew --version.
./gradlew --versionInterpret what you see
Right after upgrading the Android Gradle plugin
What it suggests: Each AGP release declares a minimum Gradle version; a project that upgraded AGP without touching the wrapper hits this on sync.
Next check: Read the required version from the error and update gradle-wrapper.properties.
The IDE offers a quick-fix notification
What it suggests: Android Studio can offer to fix this automatically, but the manual change is one line in the wrapper properties.
Next check: Edit distributionUrl in gradle/wrapper/gradle-wrapper.properties.
You want the latest Gradle, not just the minimum
What it suggests: The error names the minimum, not the only option; newer Gradle versions within AGP's supported range also work.
Next check: Check the AGP compatibility table if you want the newest supported Gradle.
Why this happens
- The Android Gradle plugin version requires a newer Gradle than the wrapper currently downloads.
- The wrapper properties were pinned to an old distribution and never updated after an AGP upgrade.
Still not working?
Do not downgrade the Android Gradle plugin to match an old Gradle; you lose bug fixes and API support. Always move Gradle forward to the plugin's minimum.
