CocoaPods cannot find a specification for a pod

Compare the exact pod name and version with the published spec, check Podfile source declarations, and refresh the spec index only when the source should contain that pod.

Compare the exact pod name and version with the published spec, check Podfile source declarations, and refresh the spec index only when the source should contain that pod.

Try these fixes in order

01

Read the missing spec

Record exact pod name and version from the error; compare case, spelling, and Podfile constraint.

02

Check sources

Inspect Podfile source declarations and whether the pod is private or published to the public CDN. For a private spec repository, confirm the Podfile declares its source and that this machine can access it.

grep -n "^source" Podfile
03

Refresh indexes if appropriate

Update configured spec repositories, or let install refresh them. This does not publish a missing pod.

pod repo update
pod install --repo-update
04

Resolve remaining mismatch

If the version is absent, choose an available compatible release or request the correct private spec source. If the pod is intentionally unpublished to any spec repository, use a documented :git, :path, or :podspec declaration rather than repeating repo updates.

05

Confirm the resolution

After a successful install, inspect Podfile.lock for the expected pod and version before rebuilding.

Interpret what you see

The requested pod name or version is absent

What it suggests: The configured sources cannot supply it.

Next check: Confirm spelling and available published versions before running a repo update.

A private pod alone is missing

What it suggests: Its private spec source may not be configured or accessible.

Next check: Check Podfile source declarations and credentials for that repository.

A newly published spec is not visible locally

What it suggests: The local spec index may be stale.

Next check: Use pod install --repo-update, then inspect the same error again.

The pod is not published to any spec repository

What it suggests: Spec index updates cannot find a pod that has never been published there.

Next check: If the project intentionally uses source control or a local checkout, review CocoaPods Podfile syntax for :git, :path, or :podspec and pin an appropriate revision.

Why this happens

  • The pod name or version does not exist in configured sources.
  • A local spec index is outdated or private source is inaccessible.

Still not working?

Avoid broad cache deletion before confirming the pod actually exists at the requested version. Record the exact missing name, version, configured sources, and first fetch error; redact private credentials before sharing logs.
