Homebrew “No available formula”: update, then check the name

Run brew update, check the spelling, and check whether it is a cask instead of a formula.

By BugMedic editorial teamLast source review: 2026-10-03macOS, Linux

First run brew update and retry. Then check the name with brew search <name> — GUI apps are casks (brew install --cask <name>), and misspellings give the same error.

Try these fixes in order

01

Update Homebrew

Homebrew's troubleshooting checklist runs brew update twice so a first update cannot leave the failing command on an older version.

brew update
02

Search for the real name

This lists formulae and casks matching part of the name, exposing typos and the formula-vs-cask distinction.

brew search somepackage
03

Install as a cask if it is one

If the match is a cask (a Mac app), install it with the --cask flag instead.

brew install --cask somepackage
04

Retry with the correct name

With the correct name and a fresh update, the install proceeds.

brew install somepackage

Interpret what you see

You have not updated Homebrew recently

What it suggests: Homebrew's own troubleshooting checklist starts with running brew update twice, since a stale local checkout misses new and renamed formulae.

Next check: Run brew update and retry the install.

The software is a Mac app with a GUI

What it suggests: GUI apps are casks, not formulae; brew install without --cask cannot see them.

Next check: Search casks with brew search --casks and install with the --cask flag.

You typed the name from memory

What it suggests: A typo or wrong name produces the identical error; the search command shows close matches.

Next check: Run brew search with part of the name to find the real one.

Why this happens

  • The local formula list is stale; brew update has not run recently.
  • The name is misspelled, is a cask (GUI app) rather than a formula, or lives in a third-party tap.

Still not working?

Do not add random third-party taps you found in a search result to install a common package; taps run arbitrary Ruby with your user privileges. Confirm the official formula name first.
