Xcode cannot run on iPhone: enable Developer Mode

Pair the device and enable Developer Mode for local development without changing signing blindly.

By BugMedic editorial teamLast source review: 2026-09-27macOS and iPhone or iPad

A physical iPhone or iPad needs to be paired with the Mac and have Developer Mode enabled to run a development build. Use Xcode’s device management and the device’s Privacy & Security setting, then complete the device restart and confirmation.

Try these fixes in order

01

Check pairing and trust

Connect the device, unlock it, respond to Trust This Computer if shown, and inspect it in Xcode’s Device Hub. If it is absent, check the cable, port, and pairing state first.

02

Enable Developer Mode on the device

After initiating pairing, open the device’s Settings > Privacy & Security > Developer Mode. Apple notes that the option may not appear until pairing has been initiated. Follow the device prompts and restart.

03

Confirm after restart

Unlock the device and confirm the Developer Mode prompt. Return to Xcode, select it as the run destination, and retry. Keep the device connected while Xcode prepares it.

04

Separate later signing issues

If Xcode then reports a missing profile, team, or unsupported OS version, use that exact message. Developer Mode does not replace a valid development signing configuration.

Interpret what you see

The iPhone is paired but Xcode requests Developer Mode

What it suggests: Trust and Developer Mode are separate device requirements.

Next check: Enable Developer Mode in the device settings and complete the required restart.

The toggle is absent

What it suggests: The device may not yet have a development app installed or be prepared by Xcode.

Next check: Reconnect an unlocked phone, accept trust prompts, and read the device preparation message.

Developer Mode is enabled but Run still fails

What it suggests: Installation or signing is now a different stage.

Next check: Read the current Xcode installation error instead of toggling the setting repeatedly.

Why this happens

  • Developer Mode has not been enabled or confirmed on the device.
  • The device was not paired or prepared by Xcode.

Still not working?

On a managed device, organizational policy may restrict development. Ask its administrator before altering device management or security settings.
