Xcode “SwiftCompile failed with a nonzero exit code”
Find the first Swift diagnostic in the build report; this line says the compilation step failed but does not name the source problem.
Find the first Swift diagnostic in the build report; this line says the compilation step failed but does not name the source problem.
Try these fixes in order
Open compiler output
Select the failing SwiftCompile task in Report navigator and locate the earliest file and line error.
Check the active target
Confirm the file belongs to the intended target and its Swift language mode and conditional flags match the project.
Fix the first actual diagnostic
Resolve missing types, module imports, isolation errors, or syntax errors from top to bottom; later errors may be cascading.
Compare a clean build
Only after source and settings are correct, clean the build folder and retry the same scheme to rule out stale intermediates.
Interpret what you see
A file and line error precedes the summary
What it suggests: The compiler has a concrete source diagnostic.
Next check: Fix the first reported error; later diagnostics often follow from it.
Only Release fails
What it suggests: Conditional compilation flags, optimization, or target settings differ.
Next check: Compare the exact scheme and Swift settings used in Debug and Release.
Only a package target fails
What it suggests: Its toolchain, platform, or dependency requirement may differ from the app.
Next check: Build that package independently where possible and inspect the first package-specific diagnostic.
Why this happens
- A source file has a compiler error.
- A dependency or build setting changes what the compiler sees.
Still not working?
Capture the compiler text, Xcode version, Swift language mode, and affected target; the summary line is not a unique error code.
